The R., in his relation of this affair, discovers<br />

<strong>the</strong> most contemptible ignorance of antiquity.<br />

The Asiatic mode of observing Easter, he would<br />

to persuade us, was an innovation in religion,<br />

<strong>and</strong> erroneous ; <strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong>refore, because it seemed<br />

to be a growing evil.<br />

Pope Victor endeavoured<br />

to stop it<br />

excommunication. A very little acquaintance<br />

with antiquity indeed would have shewn him,<br />

that <strong>the</strong> observation of Easter on any particular<br />

day, had no foundation, ei<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s<br />

or apostolic tradition. The bishops of Rome<br />

before <strong>the</strong> days of Victor, instead of considering<br />

<strong>the</strong> different practices of <strong>the</strong> Church in this point<br />

a sufficient cause for thundering out an excommunication,<br />

mark of communion, to bishops<br />
