his joint.-, <strong>and</strong> in his nails. - May he l>, cursed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> whole structure of his m:.nbors.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> crown of his head to <strong>the</strong> sole of his<br />

foot, may <strong>the</strong>re be no soundness in him.<br />

May <strong>the</strong> Son of <strong>the</strong> Uving God, with all <strong>the</strong><br />

glory of his majesty, curse him. And may<br />

heaven,<br />

<strong>and</strong> all <strong>the</strong> powers that move <strong>the</strong>rein,<br />

rise against him to damn him, unless he repent<br />

<strong>and</strong> make full satisfaction. Amen,<br />

Amen. Amen *'."<br />

In this manner did <strong>the</strong> pretended ministers<br />

of that religion, which says, bless <strong>and</strong> curse yioi^<br />

pour out <strong>the</strong>ir execrations against offenders;<br />

<strong>and</strong> it must be confessed, that this specimen of<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir cursing talents is<br />

a masterly performance.<br />

Though such a sentence would now be regarded<br />

with <strong>the</strong> utmost contempt, yet, when<br />

Europe was involved in superstition <strong>and</strong> ignorance,<br />

it was frequently attended with <strong>the</strong> most<br />

baleful consequences to <strong>the</strong> person who incurred<br />

it. According to <strong>the</strong> canon-law, <strong>the</strong> subjects<br />

of excommunicated princes were not only<br />

loosed from <strong>the</strong>ir oaths of allegiance, but expressly<br />

prohibited to yield <strong>the</strong>m any kind of<br />

obedience. This censure, <strong>the</strong>refore, in <strong>the</strong><br />

h<strong>and</strong>s of one, who was generally believed to<br />

possess a powxr over <strong>the</strong> very gates of heaven,<br />
