When <strong>the</strong> R. produced this long catalogue of<br />

traditions, he forgot to shew, that <strong>the</strong>y are actually<br />

apostolic. That would have completely<br />

terminated his contendings ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore, he<br />

has prudently declined <strong>the</strong> undertaking. A few<br />

observations will sufFxCe to shew him,<br />

that some<br />

of <strong>the</strong>se doctrines, which he has specified as<br />

traditions, are very perspicuously taught in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>scripture</strong>s ; while o<strong>the</strong>rs originate merely in<br />

Popish prostitutions of religion.<br />

Before proceeding to a review of his assertions,<br />

I would merely hint to him, that previous<br />

to his making such a bustle about <strong>the</strong> obscurity<br />

of <strong>scripture</strong>, he ought to have inquired more<br />

particularly, whe<strong>the</strong>r that originated in <strong>the</strong> language<br />

of inspiration, or in his own underst<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

He appears to be considerably a stranger<br />

to <strong>the</strong> meaning of his ovv'n mo<strong>the</strong>r-tongue ; <strong>and</strong><br />

how can he expect to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> language<br />

of <strong>the</strong> i-criptures In <strong>the</strong> above quotation, he<br />

considers an obscure passage, <strong>and</strong> one diflicult<br />

to be understood, as phrases of <strong>the</strong> same im-<br />

]..ort. A very little reflection will teach him,<br />

that a doctrine may not be easily comprehended,<br />
