POPERY CONDEMNED BY<br />

would Wish US to believe, that <strong>the</strong> dispute between<br />

Pope Stephen <strong>and</strong> this Fa<strong>the</strong>r respected<br />

merely <strong>the</strong> baptism of heretics.<br />

But though that<br />

was <strong>the</strong> original quarrel, it was connected with<br />

a steady opposition on <strong>the</strong> part of St. Cyprian to<br />

any supremacy assumed <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> See of Rome.<br />

As a complete refutation of all <strong>the</strong> proofs which<br />

he has produced from this Fa<strong>the</strong>r, I will give<br />

<strong>the</strong> reader a view of <strong>the</strong> progress <strong>and</strong> termination<br />

of this dispute.<br />

Cyprian entertained an opinion, that all converted<br />

heretics ought to be re-baptised, but, at<br />

<strong>the</strong> same time, declared himself willing to live<br />

in unity <strong>and</strong> love with all who were of opposite<br />

sentiments. His views on this subject having<br />

been embraced <strong>by</strong> two Councils at Carthage,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y wrote to Stephen, informing him of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

decision,<br />

<strong>and</strong> also of <strong>the</strong>ir intention to act upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> same principles of peace <strong>and</strong> charity.<br />

In reply<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir letter, Stephen, who had warmly<br />

espoused <strong>the</strong> contrary opinion,<br />

sent <strong>the</strong>m a very<br />

^irrogant epistle, in Vv^hich he comm<strong>and</strong>ed Cyprian,<br />

<strong>and</strong> all who adhered to him, to quit <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

'views, on pain of exclusion from his commu-^<br />

And^ to shew <strong>the</strong>m how much he was in<br />

earnest, he dignified <strong>the</strong> former with <strong>the</strong> appellation<br />

of false Christ, false apostle, deceitful<br />

workman, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> like.<br />

Though highly provoked<br />

<strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope's abusive<br />

language, this Fa<strong>the</strong>r was still desirous that<br />

<strong>the</strong>
