Universality.<br />

Protestants, as well as Papists, are persuaded<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Church of Christ is catholic or<br />

universal. I have, <strong>the</strong>refore, no intention to<br />

controvert <strong>the</strong> scriptural proofs which he has<br />

adduced in defence of this doctrine. In <strong>the</strong><br />

course of his reasoning, however, he has committed<br />

one trifling mistake. He has forgotten<br />

to shew, that <strong>the</strong>se promises of universality,<br />

which have been made to <strong>the</strong> Christian Church,<br />

are only applicable to <strong>the</strong> Church of Rome.<br />

He seems to have viewed it as an uncontroverted<br />

principle, that <strong>the</strong> Romish <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Catholic<br />

Church are synonymous expressions. But<br />

though Papists have arrogated to <strong>the</strong>mselves this<br />

title,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Protestants have sometimes called <strong>the</strong>m<br />

Roman Catholics to distinguish <strong>the</strong>m from<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs, we never believed <strong>the</strong>m to be <strong>the</strong> universal<br />

Church. Many of us, on <strong>the</strong> contrary,<br />

have maintained <strong>the</strong>m to be no Church at all.<br />

His reasoning,<br />

when divested of circumlocution,<br />

is this, " If you allow us Papists to be <strong>the</strong><br />

Catholic Church, I will prove that promises<br />

" of universality are made us in <strong>the</strong> scrip-<br />

tures."<br />

According to <strong>the</strong> R.'s own language, <strong>the</strong><br />

Romish Church is destitute of that universality<br />
