idea of his amazing erudition. It is not an acquaintance
with the grammatical construction of
languages, that constitutes either a man of learning,
or a good writer upon controversy.
In the Refutation, I have taken the Remarker
upon his own principles. As Papists deem
scripture an insufficient rule, I have added those
human authorities to w^hich they pretend to refer,
and shown their principles to be equally inconsistent
with scripture and antiquity. His
dogmatic assertions 1 have sometimes contrasted
with the sentiments of other Popish divines, and
sometimes with the Fathers. The reader's attention,
hov/ever, is most frequently directed to
the latter,
that he may see how httle reason Papists
have to boast of their assistance. " 'Tis

To show, therefore, to whom these epithets
properly belong, I have quoted the Fathers as
often as he could desire.
