languages, that constitutes ei<strong>the</strong>r a man of learning,<br />

or a good writer upon controversy.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Refutation, I have taken <strong>the</strong> Remarker<br />

upon his own principles. As Papists deem<br />

<strong>scripture</strong> an insufficient rule, I have added those<br />

human authorities to w^hich <strong>the</strong>y pretend to refer,<br />

<strong>and</strong> shown <strong>the</strong>ir principles to be equally inconsistent<br />

with <strong>scripture</strong> <strong>and</strong> antiquity. His<br />

dogmatic assertions 1 have sometimes contrasted<br />

with <strong>the</strong> sentiments of o<strong>the</strong>r Popish divines, <strong>and</strong><br />

sometimes with <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs. The reader's attention,<br />

hov/ever, is most frequently directed to<br />

<strong>the</strong> latter,<br />

that he may see how httle reason Papists<br />
