word is<br />

Acts, i. 26. " And <strong>the</strong>y gave forth <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

" clergy ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> clergy fell on Matthias ;<br />

<strong>and</strong><br />

" he was numbered with <strong>the</strong> eleven apostles."<br />

Acts, xxvi. 18. " That <strong>the</strong>y may receive <strong>the</strong><br />

forgiveness of sins, <strong>and</strong> clergy among <strong>the</strong>m<br />

who are sanctified."<br />

Col. i. 12. '' Giving thanks to <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

" who hath made us meet for <strong>the</strong> portion of<br />

" <strong>the</strong> clergy of <strong>the</strong> saints in light."<br />

By <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong> R. will perceive, that new inventions<br />

<strong>and</strong> common sense do not always harmonize.<br />

In defence of <strong>the</strong> extraneous meaningĪ,<br />

which he has affixed to this word, he can produce<br />

no parallel, ei<strong>the</strong>r from <strong>the</strong> classics, <strong>the</strong><br />

Septuagint, <strong>the</strong> New Testament, or any otlier<br />

Hellenistic writing. His only authority is <strong>the</strong><br />

Vulgate, which, in this place, puts language in<br />

<strong>the</strong> mouth of <strong>the</strong><br />

apostle Peter v>'hich he never<br />

expressed.<br />

Thus," to use his own language<br />

in speaking of Mr Stanser's version of this<br />

apostle's words, '• <strong>the</strong> unlearned are duped <strong>and</strong><br />

''<br />

misled <strong>by</strong> arbitrary versions."<br />

It will be admitted, that Peter is exhibited in<br />

<strong>scripture</strong> as among <strong>the</strong> m^ost active of <strong>the</strong><br />

apostles,<br />

<strong>and</strong> much engaged in <strong>the</strong> management<br />

of public business in <strong>the</strong> church. But <strong>the</strong><br />
