But <strong>the</strong> R. must not conclude, that, because<br />

Protestants have no infallible tradition,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y can<br />

only have a rational belief. Though rational<br />

evidence can never be productive of divine faith,<br />

this may flow from <strong>the</strong> impressions which <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>scripture</strong>s <strong>the</strong>mselves make upon <strong>the</strong> mind.<br />

The<br />

hght <strong>and</strong> authority with which <strong>the</strong>y are presented<br />

to <strong>the</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <strong>the</strong> Christian, produce<br />

his assent to <strong>the</strong>m as <strong>the</strong> testimony of God.<br />

These accordingly are represented in <strong>scripture</strong>,<br />

as sufficient evidences for distinguishing <strong>the</strong> divine<br />

word from <strong>the</strong> language of false pretenders<br />

to inspiration ;<br />

" How long shall this be in <strong>the</strong><br />

" heart of <strong>the</strong> prophets that prophesy lies yea,<br />

" <strong>the</strong>y are prophets of <strong>the</strong> deceit of <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

hearts ; who think to cause my people to for-<br />

" get my name <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir dreams, which <strong>the</strong>y tell<br />
