commend <strong>the</strong> public teaching of <strong>the</strong> Scribes<br />

<strong>and</strong> Pharisees, when he said, " But hi vain do<br />

" <strong>the</strong>y worship me, teaching for doctrines <strong>the</strong><br />

comm<strong>and</strong>ments of men*," or, when he<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>ed his disciples to bevv^are of <strong>the</strong>ir doctrines<br />

If it be any gratification, he may hear<br />

how <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs have expounded this part of<br />

<strong>scripture</strong>.<br />

" By <strong>the</strong> chair of Moses,*' says St. Jerome,<br />
