doctrines. How far <strong>the</strong> parallel between<br />

<strong>the</strong>m runs, he may learn from <strong>the</strong> words of<br />

Christ "<br />

: Ye have made <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>ment of<br />

" God of none effect <strong>by</strong> your tradition *."<br />

A similar reply may be given to <strong>the</strong> example<br />

which he has produced from <strong>the</strong> New Testament.<br />

It is true, as he affirms, that <strong>the</strong> gospel<br />

was preached in <strong>the</strong> Church before <strong>the</strong> New Testament<br />

was v/ritten. But it was preached <strong>by</strong><br />

men possessing <strong>the</strong> extraordinary gifts of <strong>the</strong><br />

Spirit of God, which, he must confess, constituted<br />

an excellent antidote against<br />

<strong>the</strong> introduction<br />

of error <strong>by</strong> such a mode of teaching.<br />
