Had he been born among<br />

<strong>the</strong> dregs of Pultney, he would have remained<br />

among <strong>the</strong> dregs of Pultney still. The memory<br />

of Lord Cromwell v^ill be dear to every friend<br />

of reliction <strong>and</strong> social virtue, when <strong>the</strong> Remarker<br />

<strong>and</strong> his Remarks have descended with great<br />

quiet into <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> of forgetfulness. The archvillainy<br />

of this amiable reformer consisted in his<br />

opposition to <strong>the</strong> abominations of <strong>the</strong> Popish<br />

clergy of that period, <strong>and</strong> his successful attempts<br />

to dilFuse real religion <strong>and</strong> rational information.<br />

The Remarker also endeavours to represent<br />

<strong>the</strong> exertions of this nobleman <strong>and</strong> his friends<br />

in behalf of religion, as '' such a complication<br />

of hell-invented stratagems <strong>and</strong> monstrous<br />

'• crimes as startle horror itself*,'* But <strong>the</strong><br />

reason is obvious ; <strong>the</strong>y exposed <strong>the</strong> vices of<br />

<strong>the</strong> clergy, discovered <strong>the</strong> deceptions <strong>by</strong> which<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had imposed upon <strong>the</strong> credulous, or <strong>the</strong><br />

'^ simple faithful," as <strong>the</strong> Remarker terms <strong>the</strong><br />

laity of <strong>the</strong> Romish Church ; <strong>and</strong>, what he.<br />

seems chiefly to deplore, <strong>the</strong>y deprived <strong>the</strong>m of<br />

that immense wealth, which had enabled <strong>the</strong>m<br />
