that if we have been deficient in
faith, we have abounded in candour: we have
never failed to give the church of Rome due

Protestants have always believed the church

" prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief
" corner-stone t ;" but they have been at a loss
to conceive, how the apostles and prophets were
built upon Peter. Of this the R. thinks the
words of Christ to that apostle a decisive proof;

Thou art Peter ; and upon this rock I will
" build my church, and the gates of hell shall

not prevail against it|.'' The apostle Paul, who
knew something of the basis of nhe church, has
assured us, that it is built upon the foundation
of the apostles and prophets. If the R. think
any thing else is meant by these words, than
that the church is
established upon the testimony
which these persons gave concerning the Saviour,
I should hke to hear his opinion.
Is it not, then,
