Were this assertion true, Protestants, in rejecting<br />

<strong>the</strong> plain truth of <strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s, must<br />

be heretics indeed. It must, however, be acknowledged,<br />

that if we have been deficient in<br />

faith, we have abounded in c<strong>and</strong>our: we have<br />

never failed to give <strong>the</strong> church of Rome due<br />

praise for her wonderful acuteness, in " mani-<br />

festly" observing what was never revealed.<br />

Protestants have always believed <strong>the</strong> church<br />

" prophets, Jesus Christ himself being <strong>the</strong> chief<br />

" corner-stone t ;" but <strong>the</strong>y have been at a loss<br />

to conceive, how <strong>the</strong> apostles <strong>and</strong> prophets were<br />

built upon Peter. Of this <strong>the</strong> R. thinks <strong>the</strong><br />

words of Christ to that apostle a decisive proof;<br />

Thou art Peter ; <strong>and</strong> upon this rock I will<br />

" build my church, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> gates of hell shall<br />

not prevail against it|.'' The apostle Paul, who<br />

knew something of <strong>the</strong> basis of nhe church, has<br />

assured us, that it is built upon <strong>the</strong> foundation<br />

of <strong>the</strong> apostles <strong>and</strong> prophets. If <strong>the</strong> R. think<br />

any thing else is meant <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong>se words, than<br />

that <strong>the</strong> church is<br />

established upon <strong>the</strong> testimony<br />

which <strong>the</strong>se persons gave concerning <strong>the</strong> Saviour,<br />

I should hke to hear his opinion.<br />

Is it not, <strong>the</strong>n,<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r unlucky for<strong>the</strong> R.s Popish claim inbehalf of<br />

thib apostle,<br />

that a part of <strong>the</strong> foundation of <strong>the</strong><br />

church<br />
