In one point, however, all are agreed, tiiat<br />

supreme authority is lodged somewhere in tlic<br />

Church of Rome. The person who believes<br />

tliis, must not indeed be very scrupulous about<br />

<strong>the</strong> foundation of his faith. A few passages from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>rs, perverted or misunderstood, <strong>and</strong><br />

forged decrees of <strong>the</strong> Councils, are <strong>the</strong> only<br />

proofs which Papists have ever been able to produce<br />

; as may be seen in <strong>the</strong> specimen exhibited<br />

<strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> R.<br />

That <strong>the</strong> Popes in <strong>the</strong> first ages of Chris-<br />

tianity,'* says he, " did exercise <strong>the</strong>ir jurisdic-<br />

tion, <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> Greeks <strong>and</strong> Asiatics did<br />

submit to it, .... we have <strong>the</strong> testimony of<br />
