POPERY CONDEMNED BY<br />

A plain statement of <strong>the</strong> transactions to which<br />

he refers, will be sufficient to show, how little<br />

reason he had to produce <strong>the</strong>m as claims for supremacy.<br />

" And <strong>the</strong> Lord said, Simon, Simon,<br />

behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that<br />

he may sift you as wheat ; but I have prayed<br />

deny that thou knowest me *." Satan, it appears<br />

from <strong>the</strong>se words, was about to take advantage<br />

of <strong>the</strong> sufferings of Christ, in order to<br />

make an attack upon all <strong>the</strong> disciples. His principal<br />

force, however, was to be directed against<br />

Peter ; because he might imagine presumption<br />

<strong>and</strong> cowardice pretty near akin ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> might hope<br />

to depress his spirits,<br />

as much as he had excited<br />

his arrogance. In consequence of this assault,<br />

Vv'hen Christ was apprehended, <strong>the</strong> courage of<br />

this apostle failed him ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> with <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong><br />

disciples, he deserted his Master in <strong>the</strong> hour of<br />

trial,<br />

<strong>and</strong> through <strong>the</strong> force of temptation realised<br />
