POPERY CONDEMNED BY<br />

lism <strong>by</strong> water, in <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r, of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Son, <strong>and</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Holy Ghost. These attentive<br />

observers of tradition have, however, found<br />

out, that when this ordinance was dispensed <strong>by</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> apostles, <strong>the</strong>y first made <strong>the</strong> water salt, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>n greasy ; <strong>and</strong> afterwards dipped a c<strong>and</strong>le in<br />

it thiicc, <strong>and</strong> divided it into four parts. But<br />

<strong>the</strong> peculiar excellence of tliis tradition is not<br />

restricted to an elucidation of <strong>the</strong> mode of administering<br />

Church, oral tradition teaches, that he meant or<br />

ought to have said, " Here are salt, oil, c<strong>and</strong>les,<br />

" <strong>and</strong>water^ with dishes to mix <strong>and</strong> divide <strong>the</strong>m<br />

" sacramcntally •, what doth hinder me to be<br />

" baptized "<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> manner of administering <strong>the</strong> J^ord's<br />

supper also, <strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s afford us a very<br />

simple account ; " The Lord Jesus, <strong>the</strong> same<br />

'*<br />

ni^^ht in which he was betrayed, took bread 5<br />

*'<br />

<strong>and</strong> when he had given thanks, he brake it,<br />

' <strong>and</strong><br />
