rOPERY CONDLMNED BY<br />

These are a part of his observations on <strong>the</strong><br />

following words of Isaiah,<br />

" An highway shall<br />

*'<br />

be <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>and</strong> a way, <strong>and</strong> it shall be called,<br />

""<br />

The way of holiness ; <strong>the</strong> unclean shall not<br />

'*<br />

pass over it ; but it shall be for those : <strong>the</strong><br />

" wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err<br />

" <strong>the</strong>rein *." A little attention to <strong>the</strong> scope of<br />

this prophet w^ould have prevented<br />

<strong>the</strong> R. from<br />

attaching to his language <strong>the</strong>se imaginary diffi-,<br />

culties. Had he only given himself <strong>the</strong> trouble<br />

to inquire where this highway should be, <strong>the</strong><br />

preceding verses would have shown him,<br />

that it<br />

is not merely where <strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s are enjoyed,<br />

but where <strong>the</strong>se are connected with<br />

<strong>the</strong> effusion<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, as a spirit of w^isdom <strong>and</strong><br />

revelation in <strong>the</strong> knowledge of Christ: " For<br />

" in <strong>the</strong> wilderness shall waters break out, <strong>and</strong><br />

" streams in <strong>the</strong> desert f." Though <strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s<br />

contain all <strong>the</strong> doctrines of religion, a<br />

proper knowledge of <strong>the</strong>m originates in <strong>the</strong> operations<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Spirit, who leads <strong>the</strong> Christian<br />

to <strong>the</strong> truth, not <strong>by</strong> any new revelation, but <strong>by</strong><br />

preparing his mind to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>se doctrines<br />

W'hich have been already revealed in <strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s.<br />

Had <strong>the</strong> R. attended<br />

to this principle of religion,<br />

it would have completely obviated <strong>the</strong> objection<br />

which he has made to<br />

<strong>the</strong> perspicuity of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s, from <strong>the</strong> various sentiments <strong>and</strong><br />

controversies<br />
