will be requisite to afford his assertions a short
examination.
Of the institution of the Lord's Supper, we
have an account in the first epistle to the Corinthians
:
" The Lord Jesus, the same night
" in which he was betrayed, took bread ; And
" when he had given thanks, he brake it, and
'•
said. Take, eat ; this is my body, which is
" broken for you ; this do in remembrance of
" me. After the same manner also he took the
" cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup
" is the new testament in my blood : this do ye,
'*
as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
*•
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink
*'
this cup, ye do shev^ the Lord's death till he
*'
come *."
From these words it appears, that the dispensation
of this ordinance is
attended with a consecration
of the elements. This, according to Papists,
occurs, when the priest uses the words of
Christ, " this is my body, this is my blood.'*
Their opinion, however, is repugnant to both
scripture and antiquity. The Lord's Supper is
dispensed to the Church in the form of a common
repast, w^hich, according to the appointment
of God and the practice of good men, is
set apart for the support
of the body by an address
to the Father of mercies :
" Every crea-
" ture of God is good, and nothing to be refu-
