By oral tradition only, he far<strong>the</strong>r observes,<br />

The circumcision of <strong>the</strong> fore-skin of <strong>the</strong><br />

heart, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> washing of regeneration, he must<br />

grant to be phrases of similar import. The<br />

aposlle Paul accordingly teaches, that <strong>by</strong> Christian<br />

circumcision, we are to underst<strong>and</strong> baptism :<br />

cumcision made without h<strong>and</strong>s, in putting off<br />

cumcision of Christ ; Buried with him in<br />

" baptism J."<br />

It is, <strong>the</strong>n, a conclusion tolerably<br />

naturr.l, that all who had a right to circumcision<br />

under <strong>the</strong> Old Testament, possess <strong>the</strong><br />

same claim to baptism under <strong>the</strong> New 5 so that<br />

this doctrine is more plainly taught in <strong>scripture</strong><br />

than he was at first aware.<br />

The concluding article of this long catalogue<br />

of supposititious traditions is, " offering up<br />

prayers <strong>and</strong> supplications for <strong>the</strong> repose of<br />

*'<br />

departed souls."<br />

The R. has at last hit upon a doctrine which<br />

no Protestant could ever find in <strong>the</strong> <strong>scripture</strong>s.<br />

Between <strong>the</strong> two boards of <strong>the</strong> Bible, it is not<br />

once mentioned ; <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> vast variety of<br />

prayers recoided <strong>the</strong>re, it is net to be found.<br />
