view to bring to <strong>the</strong>ir remembrance <strong>the</strong> things<br />

which Christ spoke to tlien in his personal ministrations<br />

But, let us suppose this promise made to <strong>the</strong><br />

apostles' successors. Infallibility, in this case,<br />

becomes a personal qualification. Besides, he<br />

must allow <strong>the</strong> promise to be applicable to <strong>the</strong>m<br />

both in <strong>the</strong> same manner. That <strong>the</strong> apostles received<br />

<strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, we have every reason to<br />

believe. When <strong>the</strong>y began to preach that gospel<br />

v;hich Christ had taught <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

" God bare<br />

" <strong>the</strong>m witness both with signs <strong>and</strong> wonders, <strong>and</strong><br />

" with diverse miracles <strong>and</strong> gifts of <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />

Ghost *." As a proof, <strong>the</strong>n, of <strong>the</strong> infallibility<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Romish Church <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> accomplishment<br />

of this promise, let <strong>the</strong> R. <strong>and</strong> his brethren<br />

come forward <strong>and</strong> au<strong>the</strong>nticate <strong>the</strong>ir claim<br />

in <strong>the</strong> same manner, that Protestants may have<br />

some ground for receiving <strong>the</strong>ir testimony.<br />

As an appendix to this part of his proof, he<br />

lias <strong>the</strong> follov.'ing observations ;<br />
