defended his cause with art <strong>and</strong> cunning ; <strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> protection of <strong>the</strong> bishop of Rome, he<br />

might have escaped, had he been able only to<br />

withst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> stings of his own conscience.<br />

But, upon <strong>the</strong> fourth day, to <strong>the</strong> great confusion<br />

of <strong>the</strong> legate <strong>and</strong>- <strong>the</strong><br />

supremacy, he confessed<br />

every crime with which he had been<br />

charged.<br />

What <strong>the</strong>se were, we are not informed<br />

; but, in <strong>the</strong> proceedings of that Council,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are declared to have been " heinous, in-<br />

" credible, such as ought not to be named, <strong>and</strong><br />

''such as drew sighs <strong>and</strong> tears from <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

" assembly *." The Council immediately declared<br />

him excluded from <strong>the</strong> communion of<br />

"<strong>the</strong> church,<br />

<strong>and</strong> renewed <strong>the</strong> canon, which prohibited<br />

appeals beyond sea, on pain of excommunication.<br />

They <strong>the</strong>n wrote a synodical letter<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Pope, in which <strong>the</strong>y asserted <strong>the</strong>ir rights,<br />

<strong>and</strong> told him to send <strong>the</strong>m no more of his legates<br />

upon err<strong>and</strong>s of this kind.<br />

The reader, I hope, will forgive <strong>the</strong> length of<br />

this narration. It affords a juster view of <strong>the</strong><br />

supremacy, than could<br />

be given <strong>by</strong> a multitude<br />

of quotations from ancient authors. Nor is it<br />

even without its consolation to <strong>the</strong> R. It will<br />

show him that <strong>the</strong> Church of Rome did not obtain<br />

<strong>the</strong> supremacy, without being sometimes<br />

most sadly foiled, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore, may encourage<br />

him to persevere, though his present attempts<br />
