particular. This was <strong>the</strong> more remarkable,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>rian copy had been sent originally<br />

from Rome <strong>by</strong> Pope Marcus, at <strong>the</strong> request<br />

of <strong>the</strong> bishops of Egypt. The African bishops<br />

immediately informed Boniface, who had succeeded<br />

an examination of witnesses,<br />

but sent his legate<br />

along with him into Africa, with orders to see<br />

him reinstated.<br />

On <strong>the</strong>ir arrival, a general Council was called,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Apiarius summoned to attend. He accordingly<br />

appeared with <strong>the</strong> legate, who insisted,<br />

that as he had been declared innocent at Rome,<br />

he should be received into communion. To<br />

this <strong>the</strong> African bishops replied, that, having<br />

been <strong>condemned</strong> among <strong>the</strong>m, his innocence<br />

must also appear, before that could take place.<br />

They <strong>the</strong>refore proceeded to his trial, which<br />

lasted three w^hole days. During this time, he<br />
