which his fastings altbrded her, she would<br />

not permit his soul to be separated from his<br />

body, till after confession. Now, <strong>the</strong> wonderful<br />

in this story does not consist in <strong>the</strong> talking<br />

of <strong>the</strong> head after its separation from <strong>the</strong> body ;<br />

for that is a mere straw amors o; <strong>the</strong> works of <strong>the</strong><br />

Virgin. It lies entirely in <strong>the</strong> safety which a<br />

soul possesses after confession. If a person<br />

have only unbosomed hin\self to a priest before<br />

death, <strong>the</strong> devil may enjoy <strong>the</strong> pleasure of seeing<br />

him in purgatory ; but if he expect to get<br />

him far<strong>the</strong>r, he will be miserably disappointed.<br />

Pelbart, indeed,<br />

narrates this story only from<br />

report. The reader, however, has no reason<br />

to doubt ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> truth of his narration, or<br />

<strong>the</strong> power of <strong>the</strong> Virgin ; for he himself witnessed<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r miracle no less extraordinary.<br />

A certain wiclced villain, he informs us, fell into<br />

<strong>the</strong> Danube, <strong>and</strong> remained under water for<br />

threo days.<br />

In ordinary cases, <strong>the</strong>re would certainly<br />

have been some danger of drowiiing ;<br />
