British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Durkin, BernardBernard was born in England in 1925. He joined the UK Royal Marines onhis seventeenth birthday in 1942 and served in the North Atlantic, France,and the Middle East during World War Two. He took part in the D-DayInvasion on June 6, 1944, manning a machine gun post on the dunesoverlooking the beaches during the troop landings. Three of Bernard’s fourbrothers also served in World War Two: John in the 8 th Army from ElAlamein to the Rhine, Edward with the Indian Army during the BurmaCampaign, and Martin as a Warrant Officer in the Green Howards InfantryRegiment. Martin was killed in action in the Battle of Monte Casino in Italyin 1943. Bernard lives in North Vancouver where he is a member of <strong>Legion</strong>Branch #118.Dyck, PeterPeter was born in Winkler, Manitoba on February 8, 1916. He joined theRCAF in July 1941 and did basic training in Edmonton and Calgary. Hisfirst two postings were to #5 Elementary Flying Training School in HighRiver, Alberta and then #7 Service Flying Training School in Moose Head,Alberta where he graduated as a Pilot Officer on December 18, 1942. Peterthen went to #2 Instructor School in Vulcan, Alberta before beingtransferred to Claresholm, Alberta on March 15, 1943 as a Flying Instructor.He returned to Vulcan in June 1943 as a Flying Instructor at 19 ServiceFlying Training School. Peter’s next move was to #1 Instrument FlyingSchool in Deseronto, Ontario from where he was posted back to Vulcan toteach Instrument Flying. He later served in #3 Service Flying TrainingSchool before being discharged in Victoria, <strong>BC</strong>. Peter has been a member ofBranch #167 Lumby for sixty-six years.Edmondson, Harley W.Harley served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Leading Aircraftmanfrom July 21, 1943 to August 15, 1946 during World War Two.
