British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Gallpen, Douglas Holland (Doug)Doug was born on November 15, 1924 in Darlington, England. His familyimmigrated to Canada when he was about five years old. Doug died on April29, 2008 of Mesothelioma Cancer, contracted while working on Navy ships.He served in the Navy as a Machinist Apprentice on HMCS Discovery,HMCS Ontario, and HMCS Beacon Hill and at HMCS Naden and HMCSCornwallis. Doug’s brother, Peter Melville Gallpen, served in the RCAFduring World War Two. Doug was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the 1939-1945 War Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp.Doug lived for most of his life in Kimberley, <strong>BC</strong>.Gallpen, Peter MelvillePeter was born in Darlington, England in 1921. His family immigrated toCanada when he was five, and he grew up in Kimberley, <strong>BC</strong>. Peter enlistedin the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 19, 1942 in Kimberley. Heserved as a Navigator Gunner on Mitchells (B-25) in Nova Scotia and theBahamas. He was also a Navigational Instructor and as part of an Instructortour at #10 Air Observer School, he set up a special instruction program forFree French and Belgian trainees. He was discharged on October 2, 1945.Peter received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Hisbrother, Douglas, served with the Navy. Peter was a member of <strong>Legion</strong>Branch #67 in Kimberley for more than twenty years and served asPresident for one term. Peter died on August 21, 1995 in Winfield, <strong>BC</strong>.Gatenby, Robert John (Bob)Bob was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan in 1921. He worked as a baker’sassistant before enlisting in the Army in Regina. At Manning Depot, Bob wasassigned to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and sent to No. 10 DistrictDepot in Winnipeg for clerical training. Within a few months, he was sent toEngland for field orientation and then his Service Corps Company accompaniedthe South Saskatchewan Regiment to the frontlines in France. He took part in theRaid on Dieppe on August 19, 1942 and returned to Europe later in the war to takepart in the liberation of Belgium and Holland. By then he had gained Storemanqualifications and the rank of Corporal. Bob returned to Canada in 1946 and wasdemobilized in Regina before returning to Weyburn. His two brothers also servedin World War Two: Gordon was a gunner in the Royal Canadian Horse Artilleryand Don was a member of the South Saskatchewan Regiment. Bob has been amember of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #288 in Westbank, <strong>BC</strong> for fifty-two years.www.legionbcyukon.ca123
