British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Perron, Bernard (Bernie)Bernie was born in Kénogami, Quebec on August 9, 1945. He enlisted in theNavy in October 1962 and took basic training at Cornwallis after a threemonthEnglish course. He was posted to HMCS Stadacona, HMCSQu’Appelle, HMCS Assiniboine, and HMCS Athabasca as a stoker and thento CFS Shelburne for three months before going to Halifax for securityduties. In 1965, Bernie transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force and wasposted to St. Hubert, Quebec for cross training. Although he was a LeadingSeaman, he still had to do basic training Air Force style. He was posted toCold Lake, Alberta as a steam engineer and then to Lamaze, Quebec forthree months before returning to Cold Lake. Bernie retired in December1970 and has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #167 in Lumby for twentytwoyears.Pettit, John Sire (Jack)Jack was born in London, England in 1889. He served with the King’s RoyalRegiment for three years in Britain. After immigrating to Canada, heenlisted in the 36 th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force in Hamilton,Ontario on April 19, 1915 and went overseas to the 5 th Company, CanadianMachine Gun Corps in June. He served in various areas of France andBelgium before he was fatally wounded on July 5, 1917 and died at #7 FieldDressing Station at La Coulotte, France. Jack is buried in theCommonwealth Cemetery at Noeux-les-Mines, France.Phelps, Winaifred LangfieldWinaifred joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in 1944 in Oshawa,Ontario and took her basic training in Waterloo, Ontario. During her service,she was a clerk performing clerical duties. Winaifred was discharged in1945 and now resides in Cranbrook, <strong>BC</strong> where she is a member of <strong>Legion</strong>Branch #24.www.legionbcyukon.ca225
