British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Black, Kenneth Charles (Ken)Ken was born in Vancouver, <strong>BC</strong> in 1926. He served in the Merchant Navyin the North Atlantic, Pacific, and Burma during World War Two. Ken was15 years old when he got on his first ship. He remembers being paid $20 permonth with $25 extra as Danger Pay for taking gun training at BallantynePier in Vancouver. His longest voyage was a 60-day trip from England toWest Africa. Ken was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, thePacific Star, the Burma Clasp, and the War Medal 1919-1945. One of hisbrothers served in the Army and his other two brothers served in theMerchant Marine during World War Two. Ken has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong>Branch #48 in Vancouver, <strong>BC</strong> for fifty years.Blain, BedaBeda was born in Golden, <strong>BC</strong> on April 5, 1925. She enlisted in the CanadianWomen’s Army Corps in Vancouver on February 8, 1945. She took basictraining in Kitchener, Ontario and then took a clerk’s course in Torontobefore being posted to Ipperwash, Ontario as a clerk dealing mainly withreleased soldiers. She then worked in the CWAC Medical Inspection Roomin London, Ontario before going to Oakville, Ontario to work in the officein the CWAC Barracks. Beda was discharged in Vancouver in 1946. Shenow lives in Lumby, <strong>BC</strong> where she has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch#167 for twenty years.Blunt, NevilleNeville was born on August 15, 1890 in England. He served four years withthe Officers Training Corps in Staffordshire, England before immigrating toCanada and settling in Victoria, <strong>BC</strong> where he worked as a CPR ticket agent.He enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps in Esquimalt, <strong>BC</strong> on June17, 1915 and was assigned to No. 6 (Laval University) General Hospitalwith the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The hospital was established inShorncliffe, Kent, England by April 1916 and was moved in mid-1916 toJoinville-le-Pont, France where it operated until the end of the War. Nevillewas eventually commissioned from the ranks to serve as Lieutenant. HisBritish War Medal is displayed in Prince Edward <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #91 inLangford, <strong>BC</strong>.www.legionbcyukon.ca73
