British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Saunders, Reginald (Reg)Reg was born in Trinity Valley, Lumby, <strong>BC</strong> in 1922. He enlisted in the RoyalCanadian Air Force in Vancouver in 1941 where he took basic training beforegoing to Manning Depot in Edmonton, AB and then St. Thomas, ON. Duringthat time, he contracted several diseases, including chickenpox and measles,which he had never had, and eventually contracted rheumatic fever. Afterfour weeks sick leave, he returned to St. Thomas to train as an air framemechanic and in September 1942, was posted to Ucluelet, <strong>BC</strong> where heworked on Flying Boats. In the spring of 1943, he was transferred to SeaIsland, <strong>BC</strong> where a new squadron was formed and then moved to Yarmouth,NS for convoy escort. Reg would sometimes fly as second engineer and wasthen attached to a meteorological flight. He was discharged in September1945 and returned to Lumby to farm. Reg has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong>Branch #167 in Lumby for sixty-five years and is a Life Member.Schnitzler, Frank EdwardFrank was born in Saskatchewan in 1932. After enlisting in the Army, hetrained at Camp Ipperwash, Ontario from September 10, 1951 to April 2,1952. He served with the 3 rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s CanadianLight Infantry in Canada and Korea. Frank received an honourabledischarge after injuring his knee. He has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch#288 in Westbank, <strong>BC</strong> for thirty-nine years.Schuppert, Herb M.Herb was born in Gretna, Manitoba. He volunteered for the Army and joinedthe XII Manitoba Dragoons at the Robinson Building in Winnipeg,Manitoba on the July 9, 1941. After taking basic training in Shilo, Manitoba,he was posted to Vancouver Island and then to Debert, Nova Scotia. Fromthere, Herb went to Aldershot in England. He was a driver of a StaghoundArmoured Car and after D-Day invasion, served in France, Belgium,Holland, and Germany. He departed England for Canada in January 1946and was discharged from the Army in Winnipeg on March 7, 1946. Herbwas awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the DefenceMedal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the War Medal 1939-45.He retired from Shell Canada in 1979 and lives in Langley, <strong>BC</strong> where he hasbeen a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #21 for thirty-eight years.www.legionbcyukon.ca247
