British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Bartholemew, EdwinEdwin was born on July 9, 1886 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England. Heimmigrated to Canada and settled in Fernie, British Columbia where heworked as a “cowboy”. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force onSeptember 23, 1914, one month after Canada entered World War One. Aftertaking basic training at Camp Valcartier, Quebec, Edwin joined the RoyalCanadian Horse Artillery and saw action in France and Flanders as amember of the First Canadian Contingent. Edwin’s 1914-1915 Star, BritishWar Medal, and Allied Victory Medal are displayed in Prince Edward<strong>Legion</strong> Branch #91 in Langford, <strong>BC</strong>.Beam, Ira ZaneIra joined the Canadian Army in 1941 in Vancouver where he was assignedto the Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles and sent to Nanaimo, <strong>BC</strong> for basictraining. He was sent overseas where he became a Lance Corporal withregimental police duties and was also a dispatch rider in the UK, France,Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He did traffic control duty and guidedsupply convoys from the Normandy Beaches to forward inland supplylocations. Ira’s decorations and medals include the 1939-45 Star, theCanadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Defence Medal 1939-45,the France and Germany Star, the Normandy Campaign Medal, the HollandMedal, and the War Medal 1939-45 with Oak Leaf. He was also mentionedin dispatches. Ira returned to Canada in 1945 and has been a member of<strong>Legion</strong> Branch #24 in Cranbrook for 47 years.Beaman, Wilfred Woodroe (Wilf)Wilf was born in Stoughton, Saskatchewan in 1918. He left school when hewas 15 and moved to Quesnel, <strong>BC</strong> to work on ranches in the Kersley areauntil he enlisted in the Army on October 2, 1939. Wilf served with the Dukeof Connaught’s Own Rifles and the Tank Regiment until he was killed inaction on September 1, 1944 when a shell hit the turret of the tank he wasdriving. Two of the other tank crew members were also from Quesnel. Wilfis buried in the Gradara War Cemetery in Gradara, Italy.www.legionbcyukon.ca65
