British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Russell, Norman (Norm)Norm was born in Miami, Manitoba in 1924 and grew up on a farm nearNipawin, SK. He joined the Army in Regina on December 16, 1942 and didbasic training in Prince Albert before heading to Camp Borden for armouredtraining. In early 1944, he left for England where he did parachute andwireless training. In October 1944, he joined the Fort Garry Horse nearNijmegen, Holland, and served as a loader-operator in a Sherman tank thereand in Germany until the war ended. Norm returned home in January, 1946.He stayed in Saskatchewan for a couple of years, then came to <strong>BC</strong> where heworked in a meat market in Abbotsford until 1954 when he moved toWhalley, Surrey to manage a meat market until 1989. In 1990, he started ona five year program to become a Spiritualist minister and moved to SalmonArm in 1996. Norm has been a <strong>Legion</strong> Member for fifty-two years and is aLife Member of Branch #62. He was Branch Padre for eight years.Sand, MartinMartin was born in Aasen, Norway in 1923 and came to Saskatchewanwhen he was five years old. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941and was posted to several bases in eastern Canada before going to Pat Bayon the West Coast where he patrolled to Alaska. Martin was a member of theAgassiz Fire Department, a founding member of the Agassiz-HarrisonSearch and Rescue, and a member of B.P.O. Elks. He was a member of<strong>Legion</strong> Branch #32 in Agassiz for fifty-five years. Martin died in 2006.Sandahl, Norman Stanley (Norm)Norm enlisted in the Royal Signals Corps in Calgary on March 10, 1951.He served as a Lance Corporal with the 27 th Infantry Brigade in Canadaand in Germany with NATO as a detachment commander. He wasdischarged on March 20, 1954. Norm is a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #24in Cranbrook, <strong>BC</strong>.www.legionbcyukon.ca243
