British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Hindle, Herbert Edward (Herb)Herb was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1918. He served with the AirForce in Canada and in England as a Squadron Leader. Herb trained pilotsin most service aircraft, including Harvards, Spitfires, bombers, helicopters,and gliders. He received the Air Force Cross from Governor General SirHarold Alexander, First Earl of Tunis and former Supreme Allied<strong>Command</strong>er Mediterranean in World War Two.Hlasny, GeorgeGeorge was born in Canmore, Alberta in October 1910. He grew up and becamea star hockey player in Bellevue, Alberta. He obtained his St. John’s AmbulanceCertificate in First Aid in 1941 and enlisted in the Army in 1942 while hisbrothers, Louis and Joe, joined the RCAF. He trained with the Royal CanadianElectrical and Mechanical Engineers in Edmonton before going to England andthen France after the Normandy Invasion with the 1 st Battalion, 7 th Company,Infantry brigade Workshop, RCEME. He also served in Belgium, Utrecht,Amsterdam, Markem, Nijmegen, and Hilversum in Holland, and in Germany.George returned to Halifax in October 1945 and was discharged. He was awardedthe 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the WarMedal 1939-1945, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. George was amember of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #2 in New Westminster for many years. He golfed andskated into his 80s and remained an active sportsman until he died in 1999.Hlasny, Stephen G.Stephen was born in Drumheller, Alberta in March 1933. He joined the Navy in May 1951, tookentry training at HMCS Cornwallis, basic seamanship on HMCS Wallaceburg then was drafted toHMCS Antigonish, <strong>BC</strong> served in Korea on HMCS Crusader as a 4.5 inch gun loader. He retrainedas a radar plotter in 1954 and as an electronics technician in 1961. In 1980-1981, he was PMC atthe CPO’s Mess at CFB Esquimalt. Stephen served on the following ships and navalestablishments: Tecumseh, Cornwallis, Stadacona, Wallaceburg, Antigonish, Crusader,Athabaskan, Naden, Jonquière, Ontario, Crescent, Assiniboine, Margaree, St. Thérèse, NewGlasgow, Qu’Appelle, Aldergrove, Mackenzie, Provider, Gatineau, and with HMC Dockyard –Naval Overseer, Fleet Maintenance Group (FMG). He finished his career at FMG Cape Breton andretired after 25 years at sea and 35 years of service in the Navy and the Armed Forces. Stephen wasawarded the Korean Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal Korea, the United NationsService Medal Korea, and the Canadian Forces Decoration with Two Clasps. He has been amember of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #7, Britannia Beach, Victoria, <strong>BC</strong> for the last forty-two years.www.legionbcyukon.ca145
