British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Harpe, Albert A.Albert was born in Pikwitonei, Manitoba in 1923. He served in the ArmouryDepartment, assembling bombs with a Royal Canadian Air Force Squadronat East Moor in Yorkshire, England during World War Two. Albert has beena member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #288 in Westbank for twenty-two years.Harper, Leonard James (Len)Len was born in Cupar, Saskatchewan in 1914 and was raised in PrinceGeorge, <strong>BC</strong>. He moved to Quesnel, <strong>BC</strong> in 1933 and opened the HarperSheet Metal Works with his brother, Lloyd. Len enlisted in the CanadianScottish Regiment in Vancouver on D-Day, June 6, 1944 and served inFrance and Germany. He was killed in Germany on March 29, 1944 whenhe was struck by bomb fragments while trying to rescue a comrade from aburning tank. His commanding officer told his parents Len “had won theconfidence and respect of all the men and officers with whom he worked.May I say your son was a brave man.” Len’s brother, Jack, also served inEurope during World War Two.Headington, LeoLeo was born in Saskatchewan on August 29, 1918. He enlisted in the Army inVernon at the beginning of WWII and took mechanics training in Vancouver, thenWoodstock, ON and Truro, NS. In August 1942, he went overseas with the RoyalCanadian Army Service Corps and trained in Southern England for two yearsbefore going to France for the Invasion of Normandy in 1944. Leo deliveredsupplies to the front lines in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He stayedin Holland until December 24, 1945 and was discharged in Vancouver on March6, 1946. Leo was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the NW Europe Medal, theCanadian Volunteer Service Medal, and the 1919-1945 War Medal. During hislife, Leo milked cows, raised hogs and beef cattle, worked at Lumby Timber,purchased and drove a School Bus, and purchased and managed an Esso GasStation. Leo has been a <strong>Legion</strong> member for fifty-five years, is a Life Member of<strong>Legion</strong> Branch #167 in Lumby, <strong>BC</strong> and was Branch President in 1979-1980.www.legionbcyukon.ca137
