British ColumBia / Yukon CommandSzasz, JosephJoseph was born on February 25, 1927 in Hungary. He served with theFrench Army in Hungary from November 1944 until 1949. After takingbasic training in Kadet, he was posted to Germany and Austria. Joe was aPOW and was awarded his French Medal. He was discharged in Innsbruck,Austria. He has been a member of Seaview Centennial Legion Branch #257in Lantzville, BC for forty-one years.Taylor, Bernard Kenneth (Bernie)Bernie joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve on April 13,1944 at HMCS Discovery as a stoker 2 nd class. He was assigned to HMCSMatane on May 8, 1944 and remained there until he was discharged onMarch 1, 1946. The Matane joined the EG9 on escort and patrol duties inUK waters as the Senior Officer’s ship and was also involved in D-Day. Onescort duty, she was once detached and sent to Trondheim to help escortfourteen surrendered U-boats, four supply ships, and the “Grill”, Hitler’ssenior boat, to Glasgow. After several escort trips to Gibraltar, she was sentto Londonderry, Ireland, and then Esquimalt. Bernie returned home toVancouver. He was able to enjoy a western reunion in 1994 and travelledacross Canada to meet former shipmates. In Bernie’s opinion: “There nevershould have been a war.” He now resides in F. W. Green Memorial Home inCranbrook, BC.Taylor, Tolbert MauriceMaurice was born in Kansas City, Missouri, USA in 1911. He enlisted in theUS Army when he was 19, and when he was 21, he was shipped to thePhilippines and later to China for three years of peacekeeping missions.Upon his return to the US, he was discharged in San Francisco and hereturned to Kansas City. Maurice came to Canada in 1941 and joined theSeaforth Islanders. After completing training, he served in coastal duties fora short time before going to England and to Sicily in 1943. In 1944, he waswounded in his right shoulder and sent back to Canada where he had hiswound treated in Shaughnessy Hospital, Vancouver. After being dischargedfrom the Army in 1945, Maurice took on supervisory janitorial duties atUBC where he met and married the love of his life. He retired when he wassixty. Maurice has been a member of Legion Branch #006 in Cloverdale fortwenty-four years.www.legionbcyukon.ca271
