British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Snider, MelMel was born in Melville, Saskatchewan in 1919. He joined the 77 th FieldArtillery in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on September 23rd, 1939 and was inEngland with the 1 st Division for Christmas. He transferred to #6 CanadianProvost Corps in London during air raids and then went with the 4 thArmored Division to France, Belgium, and Holland. Mel returned to Canadafor Christmas in 1944 on five years rotation leave and went back to Hollandand Germany in 1945. In 1946, he returned to Canada and received hisdischarge on November 24, 1946. Mel is a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #24in Cranbrook, <strong>BC</strong>.Snowden, LloydLloyd was born on July 22, 1917 in North Bend <strong>BC</strong>. He volunteered for the Canadianforces in June, 1942 at age 24 and served in the United Kingdom and ContinentalEurope during WWII. Lloyd was an engineer in the 1 st Canadian Railway OperatingGroup, Royal Canadian Engineers. During his military service, Lloyd ran troop,supply, prisoner of war and hospital trains in England, France, Germany, Belgium,and Holland. When he was in Aachen, Germany, he lived in a box car. Lloyd was alsoin the Military Police and the Regimental Police for eight months. When the warended, he volunteered to stay another year as he was not married. Lloyd was awardedthe Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Defence Medal, the 1939-1945 Star, andFrance and Germany Star. He was discharged in February, 1946 with the rank ofLance Corporal. Lloyd worked as an engineer for the Canadian Pacific Railway,retiring as Supervisor of Rules Instruction for the Pacific Region with forty-two yearsof railway service. Lloyd passed away in Kamloops, <strong>BC</strong> on May 16, 2002, aged 84.Spicer, GeorgeGeorge was born on January 28, 1932 in Carvel, AB and was educated in Riverdale andEdmonton, AB. He joined the Navy on September 6, 1949, trained at HMCS Cornwallisand HMCS Ontario. In 1952, he took a Radar Controller course in the Gunnery School atHMCS Naden and later became a fire control technician. George served on HMCSOntario; Cayuga; Crusader; Athabaskan; Columbia; Stadacona; Mackenzie; St. Laurent;St. Croix; Qu’Appelle; and at HMCS Cornwallis, NS and Sault Ste. Marie, ON. Georgeserved twice in Korea, on HMCS Cayuga in 1950 and HMCS Crusader in 1952 andcompleted a world cruise in 1964 on HMCS St. Laurent. He received the Korea Medal,the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea, the United Nations Service Medal forKorea, and the Canadian Forces Decoration with Two Clasps. After retiring, he joined theNaval Reserves and enrolled in the CIL where he was commissioned to Lt(N). He retiredafter forty years of service with the Armed Forces. George has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong>Branch #7, Britannia Beach, Victoria, <strong>BC</strong> for the last forty-five years.www.legionbcyukon.ca259
