British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Heil, William (Bill)Bill was born in Lemberg, Saskatchewan in 1916. He served in the RoyalCanadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers during World War Two. Heserved most of his time with the 1 st Canadian Armoured Carrier, a regimentknown as the Kangaroo Regiment. As a tank mechanic, he maintainedKangaroos, M7 tanks modified to carry troops. Bill was sent to Aldershot,England and then to Juneau Beach in Normandy where Bill was given commandof a Recovery AFV (Armoured Fighting Vehicle), which he and his crew named“the Mountain Bull.” For the rest of the war across France, Belgium, Holland,and into Germany, he repaired and towed disabled tanks and Kangaroos. Bill’sMedals include the Remembrance in Relation to the Liberation of HollandMedal given to mark the 50 th Anniversary of the Liberation of Holland, theFrance and Germany Star, the 1939-1945 Star, and the War Medal 1939-1945.He has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #53, Cowichan for thirty-five years.Hemphill, Samuel (Bud)Bud was born in Paisley, Scotland on January 2, 1920. He enlisted with theRoyal Canadian Artillery on June 19, 1941 and took his basic training inKitchener, Ontario before doing further training at Camp Petawawa,Ontario. Bud was then assigned to safeguard Canada’s Western Coastline.He served with the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, 15 th CoastBrigade (Vancouver), attached to the 85 th Heavy Battery Division, first atStanley Point in Vancouver, then Yorke Island and later at Prince Rupert. Hewas discharged on March 21, 1946. Bud is a member of the Diamond Head<strong>Legion</strong> Branch #277 in Squamish. He has a total of fifty-three years of<strong>Legion</strong> service, including membership in Branch #237 in Port Hardy before1976 when he moved to Squamish.Hendrickson, Everett EmersonEverett was born in Carlin, <strong>BC</strong> on September 8, 1925. He enlisted in the RoyalCanadian Naval Volunteer Reserve on February 28, 1944 and trained as a cook atHMCS Discovery in Vancouver, <strong>BC</strong>. Everett was posted to various ships on the Atlanticconvoys, including HMCS Hunter, HMCS Cornwallis, HMCS Stadacona, HMCSPeregrine, HMCS Sea Cliff, HMCS Avalon, and HMCS Hawkesbury. He wasdischarged in Vancouver on December 3, 1945 and awarded the 1939-1945 War Medal,the 1939-1945 Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Everettenlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on February 20, 1953 as a metals technicianand was posted to St. Johns, Quebec as a Leading Aircraftman-Fire Fighter beforegoing to London, ON. He was discharged on April 29, 1957 and returned to the SalmonArm area where he drove trucks and worked in the logging industry. Everett was ParkSuperintendent of Scotch Creek Provincial Park in the Shuswap and a member of<strong>Legion</strong> Branch #107 in Chase, <strong>BC</strong>. He died in Enderby, <strong>BC</strong> on March 14, 1983.www.legionbcyukon.ca139
