British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Mather, John LeonJohn was born in 1923 and served in the Navy during World War Two onHMCS Chilliwack. John died in 2008. His brother Alfred Percy Mather alsoserved in the Navy in World War Two.Mathers, MervinMervin was born in Beynon, Alberta on March 28, 1935. He joined theArmy Cadets in Vernon in 1946, as one of the first cadets at the VernonArmy Cadet Camp. In 1950, he joined the British Columbia Dragoons,retiring with the rank of Warrant Officer after 27 years of service. He tookan atomic radiation course and an Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO)course in troop leadership and was sent to NCO School in Wainwright,Alberta and Fort Lewis, Washington State. Mervin retired in 1977 toLumby, <strong>BC</strong>. He has been a <strong>Legion</strong> member for a total of fifty-one years,including twenty-three years as a member of Branch #167 in Lumby.Matthews, Stanley (Stan)Stan was born on August 26, 1896 in Victoria, <strong>BC</strong>. He enlisted in the 103 rd InfantryBattalion on December 30, 1915 at 19. The Battalion sailed for England on July 24,1916 where it was absorbed into the 16 th Reserve Battalion, providingreinforcements to other units. Stan was transferred to the 29 th “Tobin’s Tigers”Vancouver Regiment, serving in France and Belgium with the 6 th Infantry Brigade,Canadian Expeditionary Force 2 nd Division. During the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the29 th Regiment overran Thélus Trench, north of the village of Vimy, and captured thesouth end of Hill 135. Stan was awarded the Military Medal for his “bravery in thefield” during the action. The first two days of the Battle of Vimy Ridge cost theCanadian Corps numerous casualties but Stan survived and went on to serve in theMerchant Navy throughout WWII. Stan was also awarded the British War Medal,the Allied Victory Medal, the 1939-1945 Star, the Africa Star, and the War Medal1939-1945. His medals are on display in Prince Edward Branch #91, Langford, <strong>BC</strong>.www.legionbcyukon.ca191
