British ColumBia / Yukon CommandWilson, Norman P.Norman was born in Vancouver on March 8, 1921. He enlisted in the Royal CanadianNavy in September 1939 and took basic training in Esquimalt. His first posting wason a converted yacht, HMCS Cougar, patrolling the inlets of what was then the QueenCharlotte Islands, and is now Haida Gwaii. Norman was then drafted to Royal Roadswhere he was on switchboard duty and took the message that Japan had attackedPearl Harbour. He went to Halifax to serve aboard the destroyer HMCS Ottawa whichwas torpedoed by a German submarine while on convoy escort duty on September13, 1942, 930 kilometers east of St. John’s, NL. The Ottawa sank after being brokenin half by a second torpedo and Norm was one of only 65 survivors; 114 crewmembers were lost. Norman later served on HMCS Brandon on North Atlanticconvoy duty and was in port in Boston on VE Day. He returned to Vancouver inAugust 1945 and mustered out one month later. Norman and his wife Lou live inBowser on Vancouver Island where he is a member of Legion Branch #211.Wilson, RoyRoy was born in Coronation, Alberta on December 23, 1924. He enlisted inthe Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and served during World War Two inNorthwest Europe. He was discharged in 1946 but re-enlisted in the ServiceCorps during the Korean War. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, theFrance and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, and theWar Medal 1939-1945. Roy has been a Legion member for forty-nine yearsand is a Life Member of Legion Branch #167 in Lumby, BC.Woytula, Michael Martin (Mike)Mike was born in Hillcrest, Alberta on December 9, 1917. He joined the CanadianArmy in Calgary, AB on February 4, 1942 as a gunner in the 15 th Field Regiment.He took basic training in Sussex, NB and was then shipped to England. After twoyears of training in England, he was a skilled dispatch rider with the RHQ\2IC unitof the 15 th Regiment. He assisted in scouting for new artillery positions in NorthwestEurope, action which exposed him to enemy sniper, mortar, and artillery fire. Forthese duties, he was awarded a Commander in Chief Certificate. Mike was woundedon his last reconnaissance duties at Küsten Canal on April 17, 1945 and hospitalizeduntil the end of the war. He was discharged in Canada on November 3, 1945 andawarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, theWar Medal 1939-1945, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. In 1955, hemoved from Blairmore, AB to Prince George, BC where he joined Legion Branch#13. Mike died on December 10, 1961.www.legionbcyukon.ca293
