British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Bampton, Alfred Windle (Fred)Fred was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec in 1923. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian NavalVolunteer Reserve in Montreal in August 1942 and was discharged in January 1946. Heserved on HMCS Malaspina doing West Coast patrols and on HMCS Camrose andHMCS Bowmanville, protecting convoys in the North Atlantic and patrolling theEnglish Channel. Fred signed for the Pacific War but the War ended there before hecould leave. He was a Stoker 1 st Class and eventually a Petty Officer Engine RoomArtificer in charge of the engine room. Fred received the 1939-1945 Star, the AtlanticStar, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-1945 War Medal, and the Canadian Forces Decoration. Fred served with the RoyalCanadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Reserve between 1951 and 1965 as aMaster Warrant Officer with 24 Technical Squadron in Sherbrooke. He was a memberof the <strong>Legion</strong> in Ontario before moving to <strong>BC</strong> where he was a member of <strong>Legion</strong>Branch #67 in Kimberley and is now a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #24 in Cranbrook.Barnard, RonRon was born in Penticton, British Columbia in 1922. He served in WorldWar Two with the Royal Canadian Air Force’s168 H.T. Squadron whichtransported mail and other “required items” from Rockcliffe, Ontario acrossthe Atlantic to Prestwick, Scotland in modified B17 and later B24 aircraftfrom the United States Air Force. Most of the Squadron’s members wererequired to spend a period of their service time on “detached” duty at otherbases, something Ron said everyone looked forward to. Ron has been amember of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #288 in Westbank, <strong>BC</strong> for four years.Barr, George WilliamGeorge enlisted in the Army with the Armoured Corps when he was 17. Hetook basic training in Orillia, Ontario and after completing advance trainingin Camp Borden, Ontario, was shipped overseas for service during WorldWar Two. He remained in the Regular Force after the war and retired asOffice <strong>Command</strong>er of the Regular Support Staff while stationed inKelowna. George saw service in Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Egypt, Israel,Palestine, the USA, England, and almost every province of Canada. He wasawarded 14 service decorations and medals, including the Order of MilitaryMerit. George is a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #26 in Kelowna.www.legionbcyukon.ca63
