British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Hockley (nee Carlson), DoreenDoreen enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1955. She took basictraining in St. Jean, Quebec and Clinton, Ontario. From there, she went tothe radar stations on the Pinetree Line which included St. Margarets, NewBrunswick, Mont Apica, Quebec, and Jericho Beach, Vancouver, <strong>BC</strong>. Shewas honourably discharged in 1958. Doreen now resides in Cranbrook, <strong>BC</strong>where she is a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #24.Hockley, John Henry (Harry)Harry was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in April 1921. He moved to the UK in1937 and worked as an apprentice engineer in an armaments factory and an aircraftfactory. This work was considered too important for him to enlist, so he served in theHome Guard in his spare time from early 1941 until February 1943 and was“Mentioned in Dispatches”. In March 1943, Harry joined the Royal Canadian OrdnanceCorps then the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, formed in May1944. His promotion to Leading Artisan S/Sgt. (Inst. Fd.) in April 1945 stalled as theWar had nearly ended and he was discharged in Vancouver, <strong>BC</strong> in February 1946. Harrywas awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the Defence Medal, theVictory Medal, and the British H.M. Armed Forces Veterans’ Badge in recognition ofhis service in the Home Guard. He is a past member of Acacia Lodge 22, MasonicOrder and a Life Member of the R.C.E.M.E. Association of Western Canada, and he hasbeen a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #288 in Westbank, <strong>BC</strong> for six years.Hogg, Walter Scott (Scotty)Scotty was born on June 17, 1921 and attended school in Kersley, <strong>BC</strong> Heenlisted in the Army on February 17, 1941 when he was 19. He was excitedto be sent to Britain with the Canadian Scottish Regiment and lookedforward to being involved in the war. Scotty was killed on August 30, 1943when he was hit in the neck by part of a cartridge which exploded when itwas dropped near the stove. He is buried in the Brookwood Cemetery inSurrey, England.www.legionbcyukon.ca147
