British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Lang, Henry GeorgeHenry was born on September 23, 1896 in London, England. He enlistedwith the 158 th Battalion of the Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles inVancouver, <strong>BC</strong> in 1916. He served in France with the 54 th Battalion and wasgassed at Passchendaele on July 30, 1917. His brothers, Frederick JohnLang and Thomas James Lang, were also wounded on the same day at VimyRidge in France during World War One. Henry died in Powell River, <strong>BC</strong> in1988.Lang, Thomas JamesThomas was born in London, England in 1895. He enlisted in 1916 with the158 th Battalion of the Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles and served with the29 th Battalion in France. His brothers, Henry George and Frederick John,also served in France. All three were wounded; Frederick John and Thomaswere wounded on the same day at Vimy Ridge, April 9, 1917 and HenryGeorge was gassed at Passchendaele. Thomas died in 1975.Langer, Donald B. (Don)Don was born in Wembley, Middlesex, England in 1926. He joined the Air TrainingCorps when WWWII began and gained his “wings” as a glider pilot in 1941. Joiningthe RAF in 1942, he completed initial flight training and was transferred to the newlyformed Glider Pilot Regiment which was part of the Army Air Corps. Don served inNorth Africa, Sicily, Italy, D-Day, and France and was shot down, wounded, and takenprisoner in Arnhem, Holland. Repatriated in 1945, he spent months convalescing inEngland. Don then spent three years with the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR), theoccupation force in Germany, before returning to London as a volunteer driver for the1948 Olympics in his home town of Wembley. A member of the British <strong>Legion</strong> fortwenty years, Don has also been a member of the Canadian <strong>Legion</strong> for the last fortyfiveyears and is a member of Cowichan Branch #53. Don was awarded the Italy Star,the Africa Star, the France and Germany Star, the War Medal 1939-1945, the BritishDefence Medal, and the Liberation of Holland Commemorative Medal.www.legionbcyukon.ca163
