British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Ashby, Frank AlfredFrank was born in Kelwood, Manitoba on March 20, 1922. He enlisted inthe Royal Canadian Armed Forces in March 1941 and served until October22, 1945. He re-enlisted on September 4, 1946 and served until February 5,1969. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp,the 1939-1945 War Medal, and the Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp.Frank was stationed at North Luffenham, England when he married his wifeMona in 1954 and was then transferred to Marville, France. He returned toCanada in 1956 where he was stationed at St. Hubert, Quebec. After retiringfrom the RCAF, Frank worked for Canada Post for 15 years. He lives inKelowna, <strong>BC</strong>, where he is a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #26.Askew, John DouglasJohn was born in Vancouver in 1921. After graduating from high school, heapprenticed with his father at the family shipyard and then worked for CelticShipyards, Coal Harbour Shipyards, West Coast Shipbuilders, PacificShipyards and A. Linton & Co. John’s summers were spent building river boatsat Tête Jaune Cache, working on the Alaska Highway and in Peace River on theManhattan Project. John joined the Navy in 1943 and was Resident NavalOverseer for building Liberty boats in Kelowna. He volunteered for service inthe Pacific but the war ended and he was discharged in 1945 as Chief PettyOfficer. He and his family lived on Canim Lake in the Cariboo where he builtboats for resorts in the area. He also worked at Vancouver Shipyard, West CoastSalvage and taught at Vancouver Vocational School before opening his ownyard on Vancouver Island in 1967. He joined Rotary, and was awarded a PaulHarris Fellowship for his work with exchange students.Askin, Robert GordonGordon was born in Arcola, Saskatchewan on December 29, 1923. His fatherhad served overseas in World War One. Gordon joined the Royal CanadianAir Force in November 1942 and started service on January 16, 1943. Hetrained as an Aero Engine Mechanic in St. Thomas, Ontario and thentransferred to #9 Service Flying Training School in Centralia, ON where hewas responsible for engine maintenance on Anson, Harvard, and Beechcraftaircraft. His next posting was to Rockcliffe, ON as an NCO where he wasresponsible for engine unit installations on Liberators. After beingdischarged on May 27, 1946, Gordon continued in aviation with QueenCharlotte Airlines and received his Aircraft Engineers Licence and PrivatePilot Licence in 1948. He joined Okanagan Helicopters, now CanadianHelicopters Limited, as Chief Engineer and retired in 1988. Gordon has beena member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #289 in Tsawwassen, <strong>BC</strong> for twelve years.www.legionbcyukon.ca57
