British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Culley, Anthony S. (Tony)Tony was born in London, England in 1925. At the age of seventeen, hejoined the Royal Navy as a “Boy Tel” in 1942 and served for thirteen and ahalf years on HMS Bellona, HMS Solebay, HMS Glasgow, and thesubmarines HMS Acheron, HMS Tip-Toe, and HMS Tireless. He alsoserved for six months on the Australian ship HMAS Hobart. Tony sailed toChina, Japan, Australia, Iceland, and Murmansk and saw action on D-Day.He was awarded the Murmansk Medal. He retired from the Navy in 1955but after time working for Cable and Wireless in London, he was recruitedby the RCAF (Canadian Joint Staff). After a posting in Scotland, Tony wassent to CFB Nanaimo (The Diefenbunker) in 1973 and served until hisretirement in 1975, after thirty-three years “Crown Service”. He was amember of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #256 in Nanaimo. Tony died in December 1992.Cunningham, John MalcolmJohn was born in Vermilion, Alberta in 1913. He was a member of theCanadian Army (Militia) from August 12, 1940 to March 3, 1941 beforeserving in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Canada and Overseas duringWorld War Two. John received the 1939-1945 Star, the Africa Star withNorth Africa Clasp, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the DefenceMedal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the 1919-1945 War Medal. John was a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #4 in Chilliwackfor more than fifty years. He died in 2007.Curry, Montague Joseph (Monty)Monty was born in Castor, Alberta on August 18, 1920. He enlisted in June 1940with the South Alberta Regiment after having served with the EdmontonFusiliers. During basic training in Nanaimo, his elder brother Jim claimed himinto the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps (RCASC) after which Monty wentto Borden to complete his basic training. The RCASC supported the 1 stArmoured Corps through Sicily, Italy, Holland, and Germany. In 1946, Montywas discharged with the rank of Corporal in Calgary, Alberta, after returninghome from Germany. He was awarded the Defence Medal, The Italy Star, theFrance and Germany Star, the 1939-1945 Star, The Canadian Volunteer ServiceMedal, and the Efficiency Medal. Monty has been a member of The RoyalCanadian <strong>Legion</strong> for over fifty-five years at the Edmonton Kingsway Branch#175, Saskatoon Branch # 63, Fort Saskatchewan Branch #27 and now at SookeBranch #54. Monty resides on the Saanich Peninsula of Vancouver Island.www.legionbcyukon.ca93
