British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Wilken, William E. (Bill)Bill was born in East York, Toronto on December 26, 1940. He joined theArmy in May 1959 in Toronto and took basic training in Petawawa, Ontario.He served with the 1 st Canadian Guards, the Royal Canadian Army MedicalCorps, and the Canadian Forces Medical School. Bill was posted overseasto Soest and Lahr, Germany; Kuwait; and Saudi Arabia and in Canada toPetawawa, Borden, Gagetown, Ottawa, Cold Lake, and Halifax. He wasawarded the Member of the Order of Merit (MMM), the Canadian ForcesDecoration, and the Persian Gulf Medal and was discharged in Ottawa in1995. Bill has been a member of Seaview Centennial <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #257for ten years.Willems, CarrollCarroll was born in The Pas, Manitoba on November 16, 1925. He enlistedin the Army in Vernon, <strong>BC</strong> in the spring of 1944. He did basic training inOrillia, Ontario and advanced armour training in Camp Borden, Ontario.Carroll was sent to England in January 1945 where he took more advancedtraining before being posted to the British Columbia Regiment, 25 thCanadian Armoured, 4 th Division in Holland. When the War ended inEurope, he volunteered for service in the Pacific but when the War endedthere, he was transferred to the Queen’s Own Rifles in Victoria, <strong>BC</strong>. Carrolltook officer training in Otter Bay on Vancouver Island, but familycommitments required him to leave the Army and return to Lumby, wherehe still lives. Carroll has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #167 in Lumbyfor forty-nine years.Wilson, Al P. (Jiggs)Jiggs was born in Burquitlam, <strong>BC</strong> in 1911. He served in France, Belgium,Germany, and Holland with the 4 th Armoured Division. While serving withthe Royal Canadian Engineers, he was a dispatch rider behind enemy lines.He was captured by a German officer and he had to shoot him to escape. Hehit a shell hole and spent three months in a British Hospital. Jiggs wasawarded the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the CanadianVolunteer Service Medal, and the War Medal 1919-1945. He was a memberof <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #2 for forty-six years. Jiggs passed away in 1991.www.legionbcyukon.ca291
