British ColumBia / <strong>Yukon</strong> <strong>Command</strong>Spicer, MikeMike was born in Carvel, Alberta on July 24, 1922. He worked on the familyfarm until his late teens, when he went to the West Coast. He joined theMerchant Marine and served as a third-class engineer aboard several shipsduring World War Two. One ship he served on, the SS Bowness Park,carried ammunition and other supplies to Burma. When the war ended,Mike went to northern <strong>BC</strong> to work for the provincial forestry as a caterpillardriver, constructing roads. He later started his own forestry plantationbusiness. Mike was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Burma Star, and the1939-1945 War Medal. He has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #43 inPrince George for thirty years.Spicer, NickNick was born in Carvel, Alberta on December 1, 1923. He graduated from StrawberryHill School and worked on the family farm before going to the West Coast to spend ashort time in the Merchant Marine. He enlisted in the Army in Vancouver in 1941 andafter taking basic training in Alberta, went to England where he took further trainingas a dispatch driver and on operating a Sherman tank. Nick’s regiment, the 1 st .Canadian Armoured Carrier Regiment, landed in Courseulles-sur-Mer, France on June9, 1944. He drove a Kangaroo Armoured Personnel Carrier, converted from a Shermantank during the fighting around Falaise. Nick’s regimented continued throughBelgium, the Netherlands and into Germany, but Nick was seriously wounded inHolland in February 1945. He returned to Canada and was discharged in 1946. He wasawarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer ServiceMedal, and the 1939-1945 War Medal. Nick was a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #94 inQuesnel, <strong>BC</strong> for thirty-six years until his death in 2009.Spicer, SteveSteve was born in Carvel, Alberta on February 24, 1916. He graduated fromStrawberry Hill School and worked as a farm hand for neighbours. Heexcelled in baseball and starred for many years as a catcher. He joined the12 th Manitoba Dragoons in Calgary in 1941 and after basic training, trainedas the operator of a Staghound Lynx ll Scout Car. His regiment landed inCourseulles-sur-Mer, France on July 9 th 1944 and fought across France,Belgium, and Holland and into Germany. In May 1945, Steve volunteeredto serve in the Pacific Campaign and was transferred back to Canada anddischarged on January 10, 1946. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, theFrance and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian VolunteerService Medal, and the 1939-1945 War Medal. Steve lives in Westbank, <strong>BC</strong>where he has been a member of <strong>Legion</strong> Branch #288 for twenty years.www.legionbcyukon.ca261
