Bonn idyll – between tradition and modernity
Enjoying a chilled Kölsch beer in front of the baroque town
hall, an espresso at the vibrant Kaiserplatz or a piece of cake
in one of the long-established coffee shops – there is hardly
a better way to celebrate the savoir vivre of Bonn. And, for
those who rather prefer a stylish, modern ambience, there
is a hip location on the 17th floor of the Marriott World
Conference Hotel, which is located in the former government
district. Apart from outstanding cocktails in a plush
bar atmosphere, Konrad’s Skybar, which is the new hot spot
for after-work drinks, also offers a panoramic view across
Bonn, the Rhine and the Siebengebirge.
When comparing what the visitors prefer, the “old” and “new”
Bonn is almost on a par. Traditional events such as Rhein in
Flammen (Rhine in Flames), Beethoven’s birth house and the
political legacy, with the Kanzlerbungalow (chancellor
bungalow) and the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik
Deutschland (House of the History of the Federal Republic
of Germany) are just as popular as the high-calibre exhi -
bitions along the Museum Mile. The bridge between the
past and the future is represented by the former government
district. In the past years, with the settling of the UNO
as well as international companies and institutions, it has
become an engine for Bonn’s structural transition. Guided
tours through “das neue Bonn” (the new Bonn), which
include indoor visits to the Post Tower, are very popular.
Starting in autumn 2016, the historic quarter will be an
amusement mile. Then the time will have arrived to raise the
curtain on the new GOP Varieté theatre in Bonn. In this
regard, fascinating shows, an appealing ambience and
outstanding cuisine will emphasise the completely new
features.
