the cargo, with almost 770,000 tons of air freight,<br />
Cologne/<strong>Bonn</strong> ranks third after Frankfurt (Main) and Leipzig.<br />
The world’s largest express-freight companies fly to<br />
Cologne/<strong>Bonn</strong>. UPS operates its European hub, and FedEx<br />
has its transshipment hub for Central and Eastern Europe.<br />
Cologne/<strong>Bonn</strong> is also an important location for DHL, the<br />
third global player. More than a dozen cargo airfreight<br />
carriers fly to about 70 destinations in 35 countries worldwide.<br />
By water across the world<br />
Whoever relies on waterway transport for the export or import<br />
of their goods need look no further than <strong>Bonn</strong>/Rhein-<br />
<strong>Sieg</strong>. In the north of <strong>Bonn</strong>, at Rhine kilometre 658, <strong>Bonn</strong><br />
harbour ensures cargo handling between the roads and<br />
inland waterway vessels. Rapid cargo handling is possible<br />
by means of IT-supported container bridges and multi-functional<br />
cranes, as well as IT-bound slot administration. The<br />
port of <strong>Bonn</strong> has more than 50 arrivals and departures per<br />
week to and from the international ports of Zeebrügge,<br />
Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The operator is<br />
<strong>Bonn</strong>er Hafenbetriebe GmbH, a merger between Stadt -<br />
werke <strong>Bonn</strong> GmbH and Am Zehnhoff-Söns GmbH. This tradition-steeped<br />
logistics company, which was founded in<br />
1907 by the merchant August am Zehnhoff and is still<br />
operated by family members in the third generation today,<br />
has specialised in container transport by ship from and to<br />
the large seaports as well as the truck feeder service<br />
between the port of <strong>Bonn</strong> and the customers in a radius of<br />
about 100 kilometres. The fleet consists of 130 traction<br />
engines and 200 powered trucks.<br />
Home of global players<br />
Numerous transportation companies have their registered<br />
offices in <strong>Bonn</strong>. The largest among these, and one of the<br />
worldwide leading logistics multi-corporate enterprises, is<br />
the Deutsche Post DHL Group. By its own account, DHL is<br />
represented in more than 220 countries and territories<br />
worldwide and has more than 340,000 employees. The<br />
logistics offer covers everything from worldwide express<br />
deliveries and cargo transportation by plane, truck, ship and<br />
train to storage solutions that, should this be desired, also<br />
comprise of packaging to repairs, international letters, as<br />
well as customer-specific and specialised shipping.<br />
The Rhein-<strong>Sieg</strong> district is also a strong logistics location. For<br />
instance, the German headquarters of the Dutch TNT company<br />
are located in Troisdorf, which has just recently been<br />
taken over by the US service provider FedEx. Worldwide, it<br />
employs 58,000 people, 3,700 of which are in Germany.<br />
