Neurowissenschaften, Zellbiologie und Biophysik.
The caesar research centre does research at the border between
neurosciences, cellular biology and biophysics.
This physical proximity will further advance and expand
the exchange between fundamental and clinical research.
The clinical research at DZNE is linked across all locations
and is coordinated from the location in Bonn.
In addition to this, there is a close connection to the clinic
for epileptology, with its top-class research in the field of
nervous connections. The genetic medicine and epide -
miology of neurodegenerative disorders constitutes another
strong field of research that is linked with the destination
goal of DZNE, which is that of understanding risk factors and
developing new, early diagnostic measures.
The fundamental research of DZNE in Bonn and Cologne is
concentrated on the loss of nervous connections and plasticity,
as well as the regeneration of damaged nerve con -
ductions. Here, among others, the primary focus is on
inflammatory processes and circulatory disturbances. This
has the purpose of casting light on mutual mechanisms of
a variety of different neurodegenerative illnesses and
providing new approaches for diagnosis and therapy.

LIFE & BRAIN is located in direct proximity to the neuro -
centre of the University of Bonn, and it sees itself as the
revolving door between academic research and the in -
dustry. Scientific excellence, market-oriented transnational

by creative external cooperations.
Split into four thematic core areas, more than 300 em -
ployees work under one roof. In this regard, the university
research teams frequently are the ones to generate the
ideas. Within LIFE & BRAIN GmbH, they can develop their
ideas further in a market-oriented manner – and ideally,
right up to the own spin-off into a so-called incubator that
has been developed especially for this purpose and, as such,
creates an optimal start-up climate. The advantage: young
scientists can develop their entrepreneurial activities, yet
without giving up their academic surroundings. In flexible
structures, LIFE & BRAIN provides a broadly-based array of
instruments in the form of business and legal support, right
up to support with patent matters.
