Also with the road traffic infrastructure, the city and district
work closely together – as is the case with the mobility of
the future: together with the regional energy suppliers, the
city and district administration are elaborating a jump-start
concept in the field of electric mobility. Here the objectives
are: an adequate network of e-filling stations for automobile;
advertisement for the use of electrically-operated vehicles –
for instance in the form of the annual mutual “Day of Electric
Mobility” – and the renewable generation of the required
electricity.
The objective of this is to strengthen regional cooperation
and, by working together, to intensify the strategic orien -
tation of the Cologne/Bonn region. In the years from 2000
to 2011, the structural programme of the federal state of
North Rhine-Westphalia “Regionale 2010” has provided
strong impulses for cooperation and regional structural development,
which the association has expanded continually
ever since. An important aspect in this regard is also the
raising of grants from the federal state, country and the
EU – and the chances of success are significantly greater
than would be the case if the city or district were to act
alone.

Additional cooperation topics are, among others, mutual
site management, waste disposal, nature conservation, the
creation of local recreational areas, flood protection, business
and science marketing, securing of specialists, tourism
and congress promotion (together with the Ahrweiler
district) and regional transition management, to ensure the
smoothest possible transition for young adults from school
to their vocational apprenticeship.
Region Köln/Bonn e. V.
Because it is known in Bonn and in the Rhein-Sieg district
that there are topics where bilateral cooperation is not sufficient,
the city and district also collaborate at a higher level.
In Region Köln/Bonn e. V., the three cities of Cologne, Bonn
and Leverkusen, the Rhein-Sieg district, in addition to four
additional districts, the regional savings banks and chambers
of commerce, the Rhineland Regional Council, as well as the
DGB-Region Köln-Bonn have joined forces. What is more, the
district government of Cologne and the Ahrweiler district
are also involved in the decision-making and working
bodies of the association, as guests.
It’s still possible to go a number bigger. Currently, the
Metropolregion Rheinland e. V. association is being formed.
In future, by means of appropriate measures, it would like
to intensify the cooperation of the municipal regional
authorities – among these Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg
district – and the chambers of commerce in Rhineland at a
political, economic and administrative level, right up to a
metropolitan region of European significance. Going hand
in hand with this, the business and living location of
Rhineland is to be made more attractive, and the perception
internally and externally is to be strengthened. The asso -
ciation would like to position the metropolitan region of
Rhineland as a region for working, living, doing business and
sharing knowledge, as well as traffic, planning, tourism,
culture and sport both nationally and internationally – and
as a coherent and mutual living space.
Thus, in the Bonn/Rhein-Sieg region, things will come
together that belong together – and in solidarity among
one another as well as with many additional actors, the
region will significantly increase its chances to secure
growth and prosperity also in future.
