Manufactured in injection moulding or extrusion processes, these products are used by pro - ducers of film, adhesive tape and paper, as well as in the textile processing and finishing sector. Augustin befasst man sich unter anderem intensiv mit Kunst stoff und Kunststoffmaschinen. Im Fachbereich „Angewandte Naturwissenschaften“ am Standort Rheinbach gibt es eine Professur für Werkstoff- und Bauteilprüfung, insbesondere Polymere. Die intensive Zusammenarbeit zwischen den beiden Fachbereichen deckt einen großen Teil der Wertschöpfungskette Kunststoff ab, vom Polymer über die Verarbeitung bis hin zu Life-Cycle-Analysen. Die Hochschule hat ein hohes Interesse an Kooperationen und tauscht sich mit zahlreichen örtlichen Unternehmen aus. Zudem bilden viele Unternehmen des Kunststoffsektors aus, sie haben frühzeitig erkannt, dass sie damit einen Teil ihres Fachkräftebedarfs selbst decken können. Die 1988 gegründete Dr. Reinold Hagen Stiftung unterstützt sie dabei und versteht sich als Partner der betrieblichen Ausbildung. Angehende Fachkräfte finden die Unternehmen auch in Troisdorf – und zwar im Bildungsgang Kunststoff- und Kautschuktechnik der Fachschule für Technik am Georg- Kerschensteiner-Berufskolleg des Rhein-Sieg-Kreises. Der Abschluss zu „staatlich geprüften Technikern“ befähigt zur Übernahme von Aufgaben im mittleren Management. Die Industriemeisterschule Troisdorf bietet unter anderem eine 1190 Unterrichtsstunden umfassende Qualifizierung zum/zur „Industriemeister/-in Fachrichtung Kunststoff (IHK)“. Zwei weitere Institutionen runden das Profil der Kunststoff - region ab: die 2002 gegründete Interessengemeinschaft Kunststoff (IGK) mit mehr als 30 vorwiegend kleinen und mittleren Mitgliedsunternehmen, die unter anderem neue gemeinschaftliche Produktentwicklungen und die Ausund Weiterbildung von Fachkräften organisiert, sowie der Qualitätsverband Kunststofferzeugnisse e. V. (QKE), der sich für die Koordination und Organisation der Güte - sicherung zahlreicher marktführender Kunststofferzeugnisse einsetzt. Es sind also nicht allein die vielen Unternehmen, sondern es ist eben auch die Mischung aus Tradition und Moderne, Nähe und Vernetzung, Bildungseinrichtungen und Bran chen institutionen, die den Kunststoffstandort Bonn/Rhein-Sieg so besonders macht.
Bonn gilt als die Keimzelle der Blasformtechnik. Das Blasformen ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Hohlkörpern aus thermoplastischen Kunststoffen. Bonn is considered the nucleus of blow moulding.
