Der Rhein, hier bei Königswinter, ist für die Binnenschifffahrt eine der
wichtigsten Wasserstraßen Europas.
The Rhine River, here at Königswinter, is one of the most important
waterways for inland shipping in Europe.
A project that has a bigger chance of being realised is
another Rhine crossing at Wesseling, which numerous actors
are advocating and which was classified as “an urgent
requirement” in the summer of 2016, in the reworked draft
bill of the Plan for Federal Traffic Routes. This motorway
bridge between the A 555 and the A 59 could result in providing
clear relief for the existing motorway network.
More money for the transport infrastructure
Visions are important. However, actors such as the Chamber
of Industry and Commerce also have the present and near
future closely in their sights. Together, they are fighting for
improved financing of the existing traffic routes. Since 2012,
merely the maintenance and backlog for the federal traffic
routes amounts to an additional 3 billion euros a year.
At least: by means of different special programmes of the
federal government, the means for the traffic routes have
for the first time since 2015 been clearly increased once
again. “What has to be achieved now is that this increase is
to be solidified and the traffic budget is to be kept at an
appropriate level permanently – beyond a legislative period“,
is the demand by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce
in their “Verkehrsleitbild Rheinland 2016”.
By the way, there is also still space on Germany’s most
important waterway: the Rhine. Although it is sometimes
underestimated and little attention is paid to it, it is also part
of the transport infrastructure and so much more than
touristic highlight. The Chamber of Industry and Commerce
thus demands a considerable strengthening of this traffic
carrier.
