Bonn is healthy in two ways: the Rhine metropolis is the
healthiest city in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the “health atlas”
of the Medical University of Hanover, Bonn ranked fourth
among the 81 largest cities in Germany. For their study, the
researchers evaluated key figures such as the air quality,
green areas and medical care offers. In addition to this, Bonn
has also developed into a strong location when it comes to
the health economy, and it has acquired an excellent reputation
both nationally and internationally. The city has a large
number of medical and health-oriented facilities. Thus, in
this regard, apart from the university clinic, with its more
than 30 clinical departments and 20 research institutions,
there are about 20 hospitals, specialist outpatient facilities
and day-care hospitals. All in all, approximately 2,700
medical doctors practise their profession in Bonn, in about
40 fields of specialisation. In the core areas of the healthcare
sector – this referring to inpatient and outpatient treatment,
therapeutic practices, nursing, specialist retailers and health
trade professions – by the middle of 2014, there were about
24,700 persons in jobs in which social insurance is paid. Still
to be added to this is a large number of counselling services
as well as the registered offices of numerous organisations
and institutions found in the healthcare industry. In this

When it comes to medical care, Bonn and the surrounding
region offer outstanding possibilities. Every year, hundreds
of patients travel here from abroad to receive stationary or
outpatient treatment. In Bonn, the medical care of inter -
national patients can look back at a long tradition. This
already started back when Bonn still used to be the capital
of Germany, and it has displayed a positive development
with the growing importance of this healthcare location.
A large number of hotels in the Bonn/Rhein-Sieg district
benefit from the international reputation of the metropo -
litan city’s health-care offers. “The medical institutions in
Bonn are particularly popular with patients from Russia and
the Gulf countries. We regularly welcome medical tourists
who, depending on the type and scope of treatment, book
rooms for more minor treatments or also for longer periods
of time. I still see great potential for utilising and expanding
this field in the coming years“, says Julian Teske, marketing
